The Ultimate Summer Hiking Packing List: What to Bring and How to Layer
Heading out on a summer hiking adventure? Whether you're tackling a local trail or exploring a national park, having the right gear can make or break your trip. This summer hiking packing list covers everything you need to stay comfortable, safe, and prepared — with an emphasis on the importance of packing in layers.
Why Packing in Layers Matters — Even in Summer
While summer hikes often bring sunshine and warm temps, conditions can shift quickly. Mornings can be chilly, mountaintops breezy, and sudden rain showers are always a possibility. That’s why dressing in layers is key — it allows you to adjust as temperatures change throughout the day.
Essential Summer Hiking Packing List
1. Clothing Layers
Lightweight tank or t-shirt. A breathable long-sleeve or lightweight fleece for cool mornings or shaded trails. Protect your face and eyes from sun exposure. I prefer mineral, better for your skin and less toxic than chemical.
2. Footwear
Breathable and broken-in to avoid blisters. Plus waterproof, these are my go-to.
4. Hydration & Snacks
Love a lightweight water bottle, that isn't plastic. This face spray, keeps me feeling clean.
5. Safety & Navigation
Download the trails on Alltrails while you have service prior to the start of the hike.
6. Extras to Consider
Bring your sketchbook and pencils, I love this little pouch I always bring my pencils in.
