The Rhythm of a Creative Business: How I Plan for Seasonal Highs and Lows
Now heading into year 3 of running my own studio, I’ve noticed something interesting: July always slows down. Client emails quiet, timelines loosen, and the usual hustle softens. And instead of panicking (like I once would have), I’m learning to embrace it.
Coming from the startup world — and then launching my own business — I felt safest in the chaos: the late nights, the full calendar, the constant output. For a while, busy equaled successful. But the longer I work within the rhythms of design, ecommerce, and fashion, the more I understand the industry is cyclical — and there’s wisdom in moving with those waves instead of against them.
So this month, I’m giving space to the work that often takes a backseat:
#1 Creating new passive income streams (finally working on getting my illustrations on Creative Market + Spoonflower)
#2 Refreshing my own portfolio, blog, and actually planning ahead for social content
#3 Making time for my own fine art — the prints and projects that sparked this whole business in the first place
If you’re a freelancer, designer, or small business owner, you probably know these waves too. Here's your reminder: the slow seasons aren't signs of failure — they’re invitations. Use the time. Refill your creative well. Build what you want to see.
August – December
Q4 is the sprint.
This season is heavy in e-commerce and marketing. It’s the biggest time of the year for fashion and retail, so my clients tend to need more:
• Art direction
• Promotional design
• Email and campaign strategy
• Ongoing creative support during the holiday push
January – June
A fresh start means branding season.
From rebrands to full launches, this half of the year is all about:
• Branding systems
• Packaging
• Visual identity refreshes
• New business launches
January – June (also)
Wedding & stationery season kicks off
While a smaller part of my studio work, I usually have 2–3 fall weddings in progress during this time—custom invitations, day-of goods, and design suites are in full swing.
