A Summer Solstice Dinner Party Inspired by Color, Creativity, and Community
There is something magical about the summer solstice—the longest day of the year, overflowing with golden light, garden blooms, and the feeling that summer has finally arrived.
This year, we celebrated by gathering friends around the table for a casual backyard dinner filled with color, seasonal food, and plenty of pups. As an artist, one of my favorite parts of hosting is creating a table that feels collected and personal, mixing my own artwork with pieces from makers I admire.
For this tablescape, I started with a vibrant block print tablecloth and layered in my own botanical illustrated dinner napkins. I love mixing patterns, but I find that staying within a common theme—in this case botanicals and garden-inspired motifs—allows different prints and colors to complement one another rather than compete.
Blue taper candles painted with delicate floral details added height and color to the table, while gingham seat cushions introduced another pattern and helped tie the greens throughout the setting together. Small details are often what make a table feel special.
One of my favorite touches was freezing pansies into ice cubes. The flowers added a whimsical pop of color to drinks while continuing the botanical theme across the table.
For place settings, I used my favorite bamboo flatware and added pink gift tags illustrated by Stephanie Fishwick as place cards, tying each one with ribbon. The soft pink accents echoed the tones in the pomegranate linens and brought everything together beautifully.
I have always loved mixing my artwork with pieces created by other artists and makers. Rather than competing, they enhance one another and create a richer, more layered story.
A Vibrant Outdoor Tablescape & Good Friends
While I focused on the table, Vic took charge of the menu. He served braised short rib tacos, grilled chicken, pepper fajitas, rice and beans, corn slaw, and colorful taco holders that added another playful element to the table. Friends generously Brittany and Kent brought over fresh cucumbers from their garden, and no summer gathering would feel complete without a platter of watermelon.
For dessert, Christie baked a beautiful olive oil cake topped with peaches—a simple and seasonal ending to the meal.

As we celebrated the kick off to Summer we lingered around the table playing Jenga and soaking up the final moments of daylight.
The older I get, the more I realize that hosting isn't about perfection. It's about creating a space where people feel welcome—a place to gather, share a meal, and celebrate the season together.
This summer solstice dinner was a reminder that some of life's best moments are beautifully simple: good food, creative details, dear friends, happy dogs, and a table set with intention.
